What she saw was her dog’s annoying barking while not how muchloyalty it had shown.What she saw was always so depressing that it finallyturned her into an unpleasant person. 　　once upon a time there were a fisherman and his wife who lived together in a filthy shack near the sea. every day the fisherman went out fishing, and he fished, and he fished. once he was sitting there fishing and looking into the clear water, and he sat, and he sat. then his hook went to the bottom, deep down, and when he pulled it out, he had caught a large flounder.

"it is terrible living in this shack. it stinks and is filthy. you should have asked for a little cottage for us. go back and call him. tell him that we want to have a little cottage. he will surely give it to us.""oh," said the man. "why should i go back there?" "look," said the woman, "you did catch him, and then you let him swim away. he will surely do this for us. go right now."

　　the man did not want to go, but neither did he want to oppose his wife, so he went back to the sea.when he arrived there it was no longer clear, but yellow and green. he stood there and said: “mandje! mandje! timpe te! flounder, flounder, in the sea! my wife, my wife ilsebill, wants not, wants not, what i will?”the flounder swam up and said, "what does she want then?"

　　"oh," said the man, "i did catch you, and now my wife says that i really should have asked for something. she doesn't want to live in a filthy shack any longer. she would like to have a cottage.""go home," said the flounder. "she already has it."

　　the man went home, and his wife was standing in the door of a cottage, and she said to him, "come in. see, now isn't this much better?”there was a little front yard, and a beautiful little parlor, and a bedroom where their bed was standing, and a kitchen, and a dining room. everything was beautifully furnished and supplied with tin and brautensils, just as it should be. and outside there was a little yard with chickens and ducks and a garden with vegetables and fruit.

　　"look," said the woman. "isn't this nice?""yes," said the man. "this is quite enough. we can live here very well.""we will think about that," said the woman.then they ate something and went to bed.

　　everything went well for a week or two, and then the woman said, "listen, husband. this cottage is too small. the yard and the garden are too little. the flounder could have given us a larger house. i would like to live in a large stone palace. go back to the flounder and tell him to give us a palace.""oh, wife," said the man, "the cottage is good enough. why would we want to live in a palace?"

　　I grew up with all kinds of dreams. Today I want to share two of them. They both have to do with playing musical instruments.

　　When I was four, Mom bought me an electric piano. The black instrument standing in the middle of the house scared me. Day after day, I had to practice with my piano teacher. I never liked her, and all I could remember about her was her impatient words, “Wrong,” “Wrong” and “Wrong” again. And Mom was always on her side, saying I was not smart enough or I did not practice hard enough.

　　I did this for a year, but I never developed any interest. I practiced everyday simply because I had to. Many times in my dreams, I saw the long faces of Mom and the teacher and heard their stern words. Really, the dream should be more appropriately called a nightmare. Then one day, I saw Mom talk with the piano teacher softly, and afterwards, that teacher never showed up again, and the piano disappeared, too. Mom was unhappy, but I was glad because now I could watch cartoon shows on TV after dinner, never again any piano.

　　In a few years’ time, the dream of another instrument started, and it started during an urheen or erhu concert given by a distinguished musician. The melodious tune carried me away, and I felt I was lying on the grassland, indulging myself with mild sunshine and sweet flowers. As the music stopped, I realized this had been a beautiful dream, and I would like to continue this dream. That musician later on became my urheen teacher. For two years, he made me practice one hour every day, and the objective was to have me play urheen with him on the same stage. Whenever I made a mistake, he would also be quite harsh and made me practice even more. The pressure was indeed unbearable, but at the same time, the dream that started during that concert continued. When I was practicing, the dream seemed to carry me away, and moreover, my parents seemed to be in the dream too. They sat and listened quietly, as if they were also lying on the grassland, enjoying the sunshine and flowers. Anyhow, pressure was mingled with passion, and they worked together in pushing me forward. Each step of progress came from hard work but also brought immense pleasure.

　　I admit that in the world of urheen, I was lucky in finding a balance between pressure and passion. In real life, however, there is often too much pressure, but too little passion, just like my piano nightmare. From primary school on, we have been forced to study day and night, to take tests every day, to copy vocabulary items five times and to recite every lesson in front of the teacher. All the dreams pupils have are the long faces of their teachers and parents, but not dreams with sunshine and flowers.

　　I hope all teachers will realize that learning cannot go on without passion. I still remember my first urheen performance with my teacher. I was under much stress and didn’t sleep much the night before because I knew if I screwed up, it would also affect his reputation. When I walked onto the stage, I was so nervous that I almost held the urheen upside down. When the lights went on, to my great surprise, I saw my parents, fellow students and other teachers sitting on the first few rows, with big smile on their faces. It was just like the time when I was practicing. Passion suddenly overwhelmed me, and I played so well that night that even my urheen teacher didn’t know why. Of course I knew it, and I know my dream of playing urheen will continue.

　　In our daily lives, we have many choices to make, such as what to eat forsupper,what clothes to wear, or what to do on weekends. at certain times in ourlives, we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school toattend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife. yes, life is amatter of choice. seemimgly, it means a choice of tangible things. but inessence, it means choosing a way of life. life is to be lived, savored, andenjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about.

　　Hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat fromthe life-and-death disease--sars. yet, even during those dreadful times, someafflicted people remained optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks,some people turned to colouful ones, and thus display a happy mood. and somecreative people dubbed sars to mean "smile and remain smiling." i was deeplytouched by their optimisim, nearly forgetting that we're still in a battle.people who survive these kinds of circumstances, (at some point)decide in theirminds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.

　　Laid-off workers, typically regarded as the victims of economicadvancement, are subject to desperation that being unmeployed has brought onthem. but, encouragingly, we have witnessed some of them striving hard torebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstratingtheir values.

　　Although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoidunexpected disasters and adversities, we do have the privilege to choose to liveoptimistcally,to love our lives, to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.

　　Every morning when we get up, we have a choice of how we want to approachlife that day. as for me, i choose to be cheerful.

　　The Dream Came True

　　I wanna welcome everybody here in this cheer team. Thank you for coming here this morning to stand on my side cheering me on. It’s my dream to have the opportunity to challenge all the foreign athletes to the championship at this great occasion: 20xx Olympic Games. Now, the dream came true. As an athlete of China, I’m here to win the gold medal of orienteering for our motherland.

　　I’m so proud of being one of the best players in the world. But could you believe I had been a lazy girl when I was in Junior High. I’m not kidding! At that time, running was my last favorite. I really don’t know how to describe the first time I was on the track. It was horrible. When I started to run, I was simply out of breath. And while I touched the finishing line, I really didn’t know if I was still alive. It’s so funny, huh? But it’s true, I did. Well, something happened and changed the situation. We won the right of holding the Olympic Games in 20xx. After that, sports became a kind of game in campus. And there are many sports clubs in school. One day someone asked me:“are you gonna try one of those?”First I felt so wired.

　　“Try to get into sports clubs? Are you kidding?” I said. And she goes: “Why not?? It’s not hard at all, and so fascinating!” So I did tried one and I was so lucky to become one of those who did orienteering. That is a fantastic sport! You need to run and find where to go just by using a map and a compass. It’s wasn’t popular in China at first. But when we heard it might become a new event in 20xx, we did practiced hard, and aimed to win the first Champion of orienteering in the world. When we practiced, there were a lot of troubles. You know, sometimes you need to go with your feet, but sometimes you need to go with your heart. In some situations, we faced the difficulties and problems. And we need to solve that through teamwork and strong willpower. So we can run faster, go higher and be stronger. That is what we say—Olympic spirit.

　　Now the dream came true. I’m standing here with all my body and my heart put in sports. So do the people from all over the world to HERE at the Olympic Games. It’s the Olympic Games that make us together. We are here for a big day of sport; we are here for a dream of sports. We are here for a spirit of sport that encourages us to face the difficulties of today and tomorrow.

　　Different people have different pains from different places. We are now students, so I think we have pains mainly from studies.

　　Time files. Two months ago, I came to a middle school student.But I have a pain. Homework is my growing pain. In the secondary school, we have more subjects to study. And homework is more than primary school.So I could’t adapt to the secondary school’s homework. I don’t have other time to do any sports or read any books.

　　Growth brings us a lot of trouble, like a ripe to pay heavy taxes for ourselves. These days I think about, in fact, these problems can be completely avoided. If I learn English words by heart, I do maths problems quickly; if I am usually willing to try, I needn't have to spend more time.

　　What College Education Means to Me

　　the title of my speech is “what college education means to me”.now reflecting on the past two and half years of my college experience, i come to realize how much it has shaped me.

　　for me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up.

　　with great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. by dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature at night, i’ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.

　　besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. how can i best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? my one year’s experience as a part-time english teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, i have to possess some actual strength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation. amid the hectic schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, i feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that i ’m on the right way.

　　it is human nature that all of us should be fond of beauty. everybody was born with a heart for beauty.

　　today in china,with the rising of our living standard, people's requirement of beauty has been heightened accordingly. some people spare no money or energy on beautiful clothes, fashionable hair styles,the decoration of their houses and even the improvement of their looks. but it seems to me,all

　　these are more or less confined to the beauty in appearance,or rather,the outward beauty.

　　in my opinion,we shouldn't only pay attention to beautiful appearance and neglect the beautification of the mind and what we are after should be the perfect unity of the outward beauty and the inner beauty. as we all know,so far as objects and animals are concerned,there is only beautiful appearance to be mentioned, but to us humanbeings, although the outward beauty really matters, the inner beauty is much more important. this was confirmed by a famous russian writer in words much like this: "a person is

　　recently i learned from the radio an unpleasant incident about a well known singer. she is very charming with a sweet beautiful voice and very famous for singing the song."devotion of love". not long ago,she was invited to zhejiang province to give performance. the moment she was to appear on the stage,she suddenly asked for more reward. worse still,after her request was satisfied, she didn't begin to sing at once. instead,she took her time to count all the money piece by piece. thus she kept the audience waiting for half an hour. so when she at last showed up and started to sing "devotion of love",a man rose up from his seat and shouted at her,"you don't have any devotion of love. you are not qualified to sing this song ! "hearing this, the singer stopped singing and began to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. at this time the whole audience burst into an uproar.

　　how disappointed her keen listeners were when they learned this! it is the singer herself who spoiled her beautiful image in the eyes of others.

　　now, i'm coming to another true story. it's about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. she was a widow without any children, living barely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbish heaps. however,she took in more than ten homeless orphans successively and managed to bring them up. every day she labored from morning till night. in order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school,she even went to a hospital regularly to sell her blood. she got so weak for the loss of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.

According to legend, Paul Bunyan was agiant. He was so big that a small step he tookwas about three city blocks. Hecreated much of America. He dug Puget Sound in Washingtonto float huge logs tothe mill. He cleared trees from North and South Dakota and made the landin thosestates suitable for farming. 　　I’m very honored to stand here and give you a short speech! my topic is Opportunities and Challenges.

　　First，I would like to know，what does your destiny offer you? Happiness，wisdom，a strong body or something else。 If I had asked this question to president Nixon，he would probably had said，”Our destiny offers not the cup of despair，but the chalice of opportunity.”

　　Needless to say，one of the biggest opportunities given to China is the 20xx Olympic Games. Till now，we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. How much changes have you seen? New roads，new subway lines，public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors，large blocks of grass fields，and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.

　　Other than those，there are even more good effects brought to us by the Olympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example，more and more people will get to know China. I’m sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attract them strongly。 And the games will also do good to the economy and environment，for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. What is more，Olympic Games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of Chinese youth with the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit。 Now that we have seen so many advances，could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?

　　I’ve already said a lot about the Olympics and China. But I think everyone should use some time to think of this question，”Does the Olympic Games have any special meaning to you?”

　　For us，I mean the Chinese youth，20xx Olympic Games is a tremendous gift. Because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us.The society is just like a ship，and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”Hey! Come here and take the helm! ”How charming his voice is，but we have never heard of it in our true life. This morning，however，when we wake up，we will see the Olympic Games waving its hand. After chewing，most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the Olympic Games。 And mine is to be a “forter” ----that is someone who will give fort to others.

　　I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.

　　At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.

　　Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. Those ideas that finally find their way into another head need to be recognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating.

　　In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?

　　Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.

　　Thirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an epoch-making visit to China, a country still isolated at that time. Premier Zhou Enlai said to him, ”Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication”. Thirty years since, China and America have exchanged many handshakes. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.

　　As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. Peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. Underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of E. M. Forster's words ”Only connect!”

　　With the IT revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into one large melting pot of humanity. In this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

　　China is now actively integrating into the world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From a precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership, we have come a long way.

　　But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation's economic health.

　　We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality. Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businesses.

　　For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? Globalization entails questions that concern us all.

　　Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. There might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way.
