International Workers’ Day falls on May 1st every year. It is a national holiday in more than 80 countries, and it is also a festival shared by working people all over the world.

The origin of International Workers’ Day

At the end of the 18th century, the United States, and many countries in Europe, with the aim to stimulate rapid economic development, brutally exploited workers, by continuously increasing labor hours and labor intensity.

In the United States at this time, workers were working 14 to 16 hours a day, but the wages they actually earned were very low.

On May 1st, 1886, more than 200,000 workers in Chicago went on a large-scale strike to demand the implementation of the 8-hour work day. After a long and bloody struggle, they finally won.

The Development of “Workers’ Day” in China

The Chinese people’s celebration of “Workers’ Day” dates back to 1918. That year, revolutionary intellectuals distributed leaflets and introduced “May 1st” to people in Shanghai, Suzhou and other cities.

On May 1st, 1920, workers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities took to the streets and held massive parades and rallies.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, “May 1st” was designated as the statutory “Workers’ Day” in the country.

The Workers’ Day in other countries

While “May 1st” is generally celebrated in many countries, it’s not “Workers’ day” in all nations. And countries that do celebrate “May 1st”, do it in quite different styles.

Since “Workers’ Day” was established, Russia has always attached great importance to this special holiday.

The United Kingdom, France and other European countries have identified “May 1st” as “Workers’ Day”. On that day, some of these countries have a day off; others celebrate the public holiday in the first week of May as the circumstance may require.

However, unlike most countries, although “May 1st the Workers’ Day” is recognized in Italy, most people do not hold special celebrations, and there is no national “May 1st” holiday.
